Hi, Lovelies!

So, we’ve all seen them, haven’t we? They can’t be missed, as they’ve been all over social media and the socially distanced catwalk shows for Spring/Summer 2021.

I love the way they’ve popped up everywhere this season and have been fashioned in such a way that adds just the right touch of effortless, spring style, all delicately tied in minimal, geometric prints, plain pastels and silky finishes. Headscarves are here for the season, and personally, I’m so pleased. They also happen to be the perfect hair accessory to get you through those few weeks before our beloved salons reopen!

I have been wearing a headscarf as part of my wardrobe for as long as I can remember, and I’ve had a lot of fun over the years, styling them as either a protective hairstyle or as that perfectly laid back and convenient fix when in-between hairstyles or hair appointments. A headscarf can be the perfect accessory to make your hairstyle look vibrant and carefree!

Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana and so many other designers have given us their versions on the runway, but how to style a headscarf as part of your everyday?

More importantly, how do you wear a headscarf in a style that suits you best and how do you make this elegant trend work for you?

As a Personal Stylist working in London, so many of my clients are keen to learn and understand which styles best suit them and how I can help them discover their own style identity. Below, I offer you some of my top tips on how to style your headscarf and also give you handy tips on what pieces are best to coordinate your headscarf with so that this shiny, new must-have accessory has a fun future in your Spring/Summer 2021 wardrobe!

How to style a headscarf - Tie Over

Tie Over

And why not? This Tie Over style showcases the headscarf covering most of your head and tied simply at the back with your hair flowing underneath. It’s a very cool and romantic way of styling your headscarf, with an underlying essence of an independent and nomadic spirit.

Who should wear this style?

If you like to be a little adventurous with style and are used to investing in statement necklaces or handbags, wearing your headscarf tied over your hair would most likely be a smooth transition for you. Aim for bold, geometric prints with small patterns, ensuring the headscarf is the central focus of your outfit whilst not clashing too heavily with your other pieces. Spring/Summer 2021 fashion is all about cool pastels and warm, bold colour clashes. Team your scarf with a clashing tone and contrast it against a slightly oversized item, such as a blazer or a dreamy, puff sleeve dress.

How to style?

Fold your printed scarf in half (if it’s a square) and place the flat edge a third of the way down your forehead and then tie behind your head. You can choose to either tie a knot over the pointed corner of the scarf or underneath it (for a more flyaway look).

Tie Under

The Tie Under style is a great way to dress your headscarf, in a smooth, effortless way with a retro nod to the glamour of the 1950s. This is a great way to style your headscarf if you would like to make a more subtle statement and would like to test the waters of your new spring must-have.

Who should wear this style?

Creating the delicate bow at the top of your head draws attention there in a positive way, so opt for other delicate pieces when it comes to your choice of jewellery. For instance, small, gold hoops or thinly stacked necklaces draped over tops or dresses with a flattering neckline, such as a square, sweetheart or plunging neckline. Printed scarves with a smaller, floral print will work exceptionally well for anyone who would like to try this style but may want to play it a little safe.

How to style?

Fold your silky scarf in half (if it’s a square) and then from the flat edge, roll continuously towards the pointed corner, until you have a thin line. Place your scarf at the base of your neck and underneath your hair, and tie a delicate bow at the top of your head, slightly off-centre. All done!

How To Make Your Silk Headscarf Your Own

I’m a personal stylist who believes that style is incredibly individual and that discovering more about your style personality and your own relationship with your wardrobe can help you identify what styles and trends will work for you.

Below are a number of different ways to style your headscarf, one of which could really work for you and your personal style!

Bag It…

Tie your scarf around your favourite tote bag or crossbody bag – the bolder the colour the better! The contrast of the colour against your favourite tote will look super stylish and very chic.

Belt It…

I used to love wearing my silk scarves as an alternative to a traditional belt and with the heavy 70’s influence (à la Victoria Beckham) very much on trend this season, this is a great way to style your headscarf in a fresh way – especially if you’re a fan of the high waisted trouser!

Collar It…

Just a simple addition of a headscarf in the right place can really be a game-changer for your Spring wardrobe. Style your scarf draped around the collar of your open blazer, oversized shirt or leather jacket or style it tied around your neck for a more unconventional look. For anyone who wants to draw attention away from their lower half, this will mirror the powerful impact of a statement necklace – but does so in a way that is both updated and a little more original.

If you’re feeling extra edgy, layer two silk scarves and team with items that are neutral in tones such as brown, cream, grey or black.

Multitask It…

Why not thoroughly maximise the potential of your headscarf and fully embrace that uplighting spring vibe by transforming your scarf into a halter neck or handkerchief top? Many of the headscarves you’ll be shopping for will be large enough to opt for this style, so simply fold your headscarf in half and tie behind your back for an easy, versatile style for the longed-for warmer days.

Chin It…

Think style icons and Hollywood greats from yester-year. Tie your headscarf over the head and under the chin to channel your inner Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn or our very own Queen Elizabeth II. The epitome of a charming and exquisite look – wear with confidence and a smile!
