Have Yourself A Merry Lippy Christmas 1

I’m often asked what I’m wearing on my lips. What most people will know is that often the hardest thing to get right, is one of the most important items to have in your make-up bag!

How many times have you been on a night out and feel like you’re constantly needing to touch up your lipstick?

Over the years, my love affair with lipsticks has been… well, a turbulent one!

From finding the perfect colour, then soon realising that it doesn’t have the staying power it promised. Or the colour is great and it stays on well but the texture is too sticky or too dry.

Or (my personal favourite) when you finally find what you feel is ‘the one’; texture, colour, longevity are all there working together beautifully – then out of nowhere, the brand discontinues it and it’s never to be seen again!

Hands up if you can relate?

What I’ve discovered is, just like your true signature fragrance, the perfect type of lipstick for any person can be incredibly personal. When you find that perfect lipstick/lip liner combo that pulls out all the stops – there’s a very good chance that it will be your go-to purchase for years to come.

Now that we are in the merry glow of December and all of your Christmas party invites have been RSVP’d; one of the best accessories to a fantastically festive and stylish ‘wow’ outfit is a super smooth, striking lip colour that elevates your look – making your lips do all of the talking.

Who wants to be constantly checking your reflection for a faded lip when that extra time can be spent sipping cocktails and scouting for mistletoe?

Here’s an edit of my top longest wearing lip colour formulations for the festive season.. and beyond!

For That Perfect Tonal ‘Nude’…

Lip Colour: Honeylove Matte Lipstick, M-A-C, £17.50
Lip Liner: 321 Brown, Creamy Colour Comfort Lip Liner, KIKO MILANO, £4.99

Everyone’s idea of what ‘nude’ is, is different – so I prefer to use the term tonal. This combination is one of my all time favourites and is my go-to for a natural, long-wearing look that will complement any make-up look, any outfit and any occasion.
Honeylove is a true matte texture that has a soft, pink hue. It’s a creamy matte, so it doesn’t feel overly drying on the lips – instead it leaves your lips feeling silky and smooth.

Top Tip: Apply several coats to create the ultimate, flat matte look. Buff your lips together between each application to blend the lipstick and liner together – or touch up with more liner for a more exaggerated, 90s inspired look.

For That Show-Stopping Red…

Lip Colour: Badass Icon Matte Lipstick in Diana, UOMA, £21.50
Lip Liner: 516 Cherry Red, Smart Fusion Lip Liner, KIKO, £2.50

UOMA is a fab, new make-up brand which had its worldwide launch this summer. The ethos behind the brand is inspiring, collective and inclusive. Simply put, they believe “authentic beauty is the ultimate form of self expression”.

This statement red feels like applying a cushiony, velvety dream all over your lips. The staying power is intense and comes with a stain-like effect; so be sure to be liberal with your make-up remover at the end of the night.

Top Tip: Go hard or go home with this one! The more you apply, the richer, bolder and better the look. And that can only be a good thing!

For That Dramatic Effect…

Lip Colour: Rock With You Powermatte Lip Pigment, NARS, £23
Lip Liner: Nightmoth Lip Pencil, M-A-C, £13

The Powermatte collection from NARS is hands down, one of the most amazingly ‘effective’ set of lip colours I’ve ever worn. These lip colours DO NOT budge – I’m talking 12 hour wear, through the entire work day and well into the night. These are more of a liquid lipstick, so the applicator is in the form of a wand which allows you to apply the colour with ease (however one coat is definitely adequate enough) Match with a lip colour that is as close as possible to your chosen colour or half a shade deeper for an ultimate statement look.

Top Tip: When first applied, the Powermattes have a wet look finish. Don’t panic, they dry down to a cool, true matte finish within 20 seconds. Keep your lips very still during this drying time to avoid any smudging.

For That Bright, Burst Of Colour…

Lip colour: Portofino Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick, STILA, £13.94

This little long-wearing gem from Stila, is a liquid lipstick with attitude. This formulation glides on like a gloss but sets on the lip like a translucent powder. The colour payoff from one stroke is immense, so you will feel like the right pop of colour will make that festive, shimmery number all the more glam.

The selection of colours available range from the coolest of pastel pinks to the warmest of scarlett reds – and everything in between.

This is the mattest formulation in the edit, so if you’re prone to dry lips, you will need to apply a considerable amount of balm or lip primer before putting it on.

Top Tip: Dab the applicator onto the tip of your ring finger and dab onto the lip to create a soft focus finish. No lip liner required with this one!
